Rohnert Park, CA – The 2017 Sonoma County Zero Waste Symposium is held at the SOMO Village event Center in Rohnert Park, CA. The program begins at 8AM.
Sonoma County is in transition with the way discards are managed as Windsor and Santa Rosa are in the bidding process for a new waste, recycling, and organics hauler, Recology is in the process of purchasing The Ratto Group and the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency will be issuing a Request for Proposal for organics processing at the end of the month.
The Symposium will bring together numerous stakeholders including elected officials, haulers bidding on contracts, non-profits, businesses, agriculture, and concerned citizens to discuss, learn, and engage on Zero Waste as a climate initiative and on sustainable ways we can manage our resources through minimizing wasting while maximizing reuse, recycling, composting, and refusing wasting in the first place.
Notable presenters include: Patrick Carter – Executive Director, Sonoma County Waste Management Agency; JoAnn Moser – Director of Operations, Goodwill Industries of the Redwood Empire; Stephanie Barger – Director of Market Development, Zero Waste Programs, U.S. Green Business Council; Josh Prigge – Director of Regenerative Development, Fetzer Vineyard; Renaud des Rosiers – Sustainability Manager, Amy’s Kitchen, Inc; Marty Bennett – Co-Chair, North Bay Jobs with Justice & Local 665; Paul Kaiser – Singing Frogs Farm; and Jake Mackenzie – Mayor of Rohnert Park.
At this event two initiatives will be launched; 1) Sip it Sonoma a campaign for restaurants to provide straws only upon request and 2) Preparation of a draft Zero Waste Ordinance for cities, the county and the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency to adopt.
